House of Rusa K. Gajdova
Buildings/The Gajdovi family house is located in the Dvorovi neighborhood of Veles and was designed by Slavko K. Gajdov at the request of his sister, Rusa Gajdova. With its early modern design, it stands out from the houses that are typical for Veles in that period.
The building consists of two wings set parallel to the two streets, which meet at an oblique angle emphasized by the balcony on the first floor. In the aesthetic shaping of the façades, an equal and clean geometric treatment is applied. They are simple and free of any decoration, and their volume is broken up by symmetrically arranged rectangular windows and two vertical elements with three oculi each at the ends of the building.

In the basement, in addition to the storage rooms, there was also a laundry room, while at the attic level, part of the space is allocated for a flat terrace oriented to the north. The house has two entrances (east and west).StructureThe building is constructed with a massive structural system. The walls are built of fired brick, while the floor structures are made of reinforced concrete slabs. The roof structure is wooden.RoofA complex, multi-pitched roof with roofing tiles covers the attic and a flat terrace is covers the rest of the building.FaçadeThe façade was plastered and painted in two tones, with distinctive details that emphasize its horizontality.CarpentryThe exterior woodwork consists of painted wooden windows and doors. Built-in wooden protective shutters are installed on the ground floor. The windows are made of wood with horizontal profiling and are divided into five horizontal sections.Building surroundingsThe house occupies most of the building plot, leaving space for a larger front (eastern) courtyard and a smaller side (southwestern) courtyard, with an unknown landscape design.ContextThe house of Rusa Gajdova is located in Dvorovi - once the most urbanized neighborhood in Veles. The streets in this area were straight and wide, and the houses were two stories high with large courtyards arranged with gardens, trees, and flowers, all enclosed by stone walls. The neighborhood got its name from these features. Many prominent citizens of Veles settled and lived in Dvorovi. Positioned at the corner of two neighborhood streets, in close proximity to the Veles - Gevgelija railway line, the house stands out with its refined modernist appearance, corner terrace, and circular windows, forming a complete contrast to the neighboring houses.
- RoofA complex, multi-pitched roof with roofing tiles covers the attic and a flat terrace is covers the rest of the building.FaçadeThe façade was plastered and painted in one tone, with distinctive details that emphasize its horizontality.CarpentryThe exterior woodwork consists of painted wooden windows and doors. Built-in wooden protective shutters are installed on the ground floor. The windows are typical of early modernism, with an emphasis on horizontality, and are divided into five horizontal sections. Several doors have been replaced with PVC fittings, and shutters have been added on the first floor.Building surroundingsThe house occupies most of the building plot, leaving space for a larger front (eastern) courtyard and a smaller side (southwestern) courtyard. The larger courtyard is enclosed from the street by an extension of an auxiliary structure. Due to the division of the house, which is owned by different owners, several courtyard gates made of various materials have been installed. The fence towards the smaller courtyard is made of wire stretched between concrete posts, and the courtyard contains a number of electrical devices and waste.Exterior conditiongoodExterior authenticitysatisfactoryModificationsSeveral interventions were made during an undetermined period, such as: -Only the middle oculus remains on the southeastern façade (the one above it was converted into a square opening, and the lower one was incorporated into a newly installed PVC door). -Only the topmost oculus remains on the eastern façade (the one below it was transformed into a rectangular arched window, and a door was created in place of the lowest oculus). -Metal structure was added to the eastern side of the reinforced concrete balcony railing to support a canopy. -An auxiliary single-story structure was built in the eastern courtyard, featuring a flat roof enclosed by a metal railing and used as a terrace. -Shutters have been installed on the windows. -Roofing tiles have been replaced.
- The house is owned by several different owners, which increases the risk of making non-authentic changes to accommodate their needs.

- To the relevant authorities for the protection of cultural heritage and other decision-makers: Taking into account the authenticity, state of preservation, and cultural-historical significance of the building as an inseparable part of the development of Veles, it should be recognized as architectural cultural heritage from the period between the two world wars and included in the inventory of valuable buildings. Recommendation to the owners: The value of the building should be respected when installing elements directly on the façades, and if changes are made, they should be aimed at preserving its authenticity.
